The best thing you can do as a new hearing aid wearer is to forget everything you thought you knew about hearing aids. Hearing devices today are nothing like the hearing devices our grandparents and their parents used to wear. With all kinds of new features and cutting-edge technology, hearing aids today are impressive, immersive and can transform your world and quality of life beyond your wildest dreams. Before we jump in, congratulations on investing in your hearing and mental health. By wearing hearing devices, you’ve chosen to support your total body health and treat your hearing loss. When you received your hearing aid(s), your hearing health professional likely covered how to properly care for your hearing devices. Even though you now have your hearing instruments, it is important to maintain a relationship with your hearing health professional and schedule regular visits for hearing aid clean & checks, as well as continued monitoring of your hearing health. Aside from this, there are other ways you can get the most out of your hearing aid experience:

Wear your Aid(s) EVERY DAY

The more often you wear your hearing devices, the quicker you will adjust and get used to wearing them. It is common for it to take some time for your ears and brain to adjust to hearing certain sounds again. The more often you wear your hearing aids, the more practice your ears and brain can have hearing again. If your hearing devices feel uncomfortable in your ears or seem to be too loud, call and visit your hearing healthcare professional. They will be able to adjust your hearing aids to work for your specific hearing loss needs, which can take a visit or two to accomplish.

Moisture/Water and Hearing Aids DO NOT MIX

The best way you can store your aids when you are not wearing them is to use a dry aid box or store them safely in a dry, cool place. Always take your hearing aids out whenever you shower or go swimming. Water and hearing aids do not mix, and moisture can damage your hearing aids. When water or excessive moisture get into your hearing aids it can damage the battery and technical components of the device. To keep your hearing aids functioning properly and for a longer time, keep them dry. If you do get your hearing aids wet, it is important to remove the battery immediately and keep the battery door open while you dry them out in a cool, dry place.

Regular Cleanings Will Extend the Life of Your Devices

Every time you take your hearing devices out of your ears you should clean them using a dry cloth. Our ears are warm and moist, so when hearing aids are being worn for long periods of time, they can accumulate earwax, dust, sweat and other debris. Gently wipe away any earwax or other debris using a dry cloth. Doing this regularly will remove any wax build-up or dirt. Be sure to clean your hearing aids every time they were in your ears to keep them working their best.

Regular Hearing Aid Clean & Checks by A Professional Are Important

Cleaning your hearing aids after each use is a good step to maintaining them. However, to get the most use out of your devices you should take them to your hearing healthcare professional to be deep cleaned every few months. Cleanings will remove any earwax or dust deep that has built up inside your aids. This will allow your hearing aids to continue working their best for you for a longer time.

Open the Battery Door When Hearing Aids Are Not Being Used

To make your battery life last longer and to keep your aids dry, leave the battery door open when you are not using your hearing aids. When you take them out at night simply open the battery door, this will ensure the battery stays dry, preserving its life and the inner workings of the aids can dry out as well. This is a simple way to make your hearing aid life and battery last.
